Harold Thorton Stevens
Harold T. Stevens Grandpa H Harold Thorton Stevens returned to his heavenly home on January 24th, 2009 at the age of 87. He was born on June 21, 1921 to Embra Thorton and Ida Watts Stevens. He was loved and adored by his three sisters and parents. He grew up in the Salt Lake area and upon graduating from South High School enlisted in the United States Navy just as the World War II became a world wide conflict. His first naval assignment was coming to Pearl Harbor just days after the bombing on December 7th. He was in Alaska, the Aleutian Islands, and the Phillipines during the war. He was given an honorable release and returned home to a job at Hill Field Air Force Base where he met and married June Lloyd on November 4, 1946, they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple a few years later. He started a company in construction, Stevens Heating and Plumbing. He built and owned many post war apartments and condo units. He built the Treasure Mountain Inn in Park City and several other large hotels that are still in use today. He went on to larger commercial construction projects including National Lead Magnesium Refinery on the Great Salt Lake with the Stevens Doran Company. He also had a love for the old elegant homes in the Salt Lake City area and renovated several wonderful homes on the avenues and Holladay. He and June raised five children in the Holladay area. His family was the center of his life. He and June enjoyed 62 years of a happy marriage. June passed away in August of this last year. He was truly lonely without her here. Their five children, 12 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren meant everything to Grandpa H. He was a true sportsman and loved hunting, fishing, boating, and his ranch in Idaho where he had-built his cabin. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and shared his talents in the scouting program for many yeas. Harold is preceded in death by his wife June Lloyd Stevens, daughter Cary Catherine Stevens Jones; daughter in law Peggy Hocking Stevens, his parents, and his sisters Jean (Eddy) Arata, Peggy Quist, and Ida Mae Brooks. He is survived by his children, Sean Shannon (Micheal) Press, Mark Lloyd Stevens, Lacey Anne (Curtis) Ence, and Brett Benjamin Stevens, his 12 granchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The family wishes to thank granddaughter Jessica Stevens and Aaron Boss for their excellent care of Harold in the last year. Funeral services will be held Thursday January 29, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the Holladay Ward 5450 South Holladay Blvd. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7-8 p.m. as well as one hour prior to the service Thursday at the ward. Interment to follow at the Salt Lake City Cemetery, 4th Ave and "N" Street.
